Abstract

This webinar aims to familiarize you with common retinal vascular conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and retinal vein occlusion, which together represent one of the most common causes of vision loss in the developed world. We focus on innovations in the domain of retinal disease, which improve our diagnostic reasoning and treatment of these common and visually threatening conditions.

About The Speaker

2023_12_29_Marko HeadshotDr. Marko Popovic is a Medical Retina Specialist in the Department of Ophthalmology, St. Michael's Hospital and Kensington Vision & Research Centre. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. He earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, Masters degree in epidemiology at Harvard University, and Bachelor of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

In residency, he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto, an executive member of the planning committee of the 61st Annual Walter Wright Symposium and the Research Director of the Council of Canadian Ophthalmology Residents. As a resident, he was awarded the Kensington Eye Institute Award for Excellence in Surgery as the top surgical resident, the Dr. Michael Shea and R. Gordon Kelly Awards for the best senior and junior resident, respectively, and was a three time winner of the Alumni Award, recognizing the best resident research presentation at the annual Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences Research Day.

Marko’s research interests include retinal vascular disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, neovascular age-related macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusion, as well as vitreoretinal surgery and cataract surgery. He has published over 200 articles in the peer-reviewed literature and has been involved in nearly 400 poster presentations and over 100 oral presentations at local, national and international conferences. His publications have been features in prominent journals, such as Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, JAMA Network Open, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Retina.

Marko is focused on working collaboratively with diverse teams to design impactful studies that translate into practical improvements in the care of patients with blinding disease.
