This session explores practical approaches to delivering trauma-informed care in primary care environments, with a focus on identifying and supporting patients experiencing PTSD. We’ll review evidence-based treatment pathways, common clinical challenges, and share practical “clinical pearls” that can be applied immediately in day-to-day practice.
Dr. Alpna Munshi is a Canadian-trained psychiatrist in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She completed her medical degree at Dalhousie University in 2006, and her psychiatry residency at the University of Toronto in 2011.
Dr. Munshi held a full-time staff position at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) since 2011 and continues to maintain an active affiliation with the hospital following her transition to private practice in 2023. Her clinical background includes over a decade of experience in specialized outpatient programs for Mood and Anxiety Disorders and Complex Trauma. She also has extensive experience as an educator at the university for both residents and faculty and has presented at numerous conferences nationally and internationally in cultural psychiatry and EDI.
She has also served as a consultant psychiatrist at Women’s Health in Women’s Hands Community Health Centre for over 15 years, providing comprehensive assessments and multidisciplinary team support for patients from diverse and marginalized backgrounds. Dr. Munshi has held leadership and teaching roles within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, where she has received awards for excellence in education. Her clinical and academic interests include mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, cultural psychiatry and women’s mental health.
